more than a bike shop

The vision for the Gravity MTB Garage has always been about COMMUNITY. Picture this: after a ride in the Cumberland forest, a crew of riders pedals into town, swings by the brewery, and rolls up to Gravity’s open bay doors. One heads to the service centre for a quick tune. Another flops on the couch to watch bike videos, while their friend browses gear in the retail space. Out back, there’s a bike wash, picnic tables, and plans for an outdoor market to refuel and reconnect post-ride.

This rider-first HQ opened in May 2023 and marks a major milestone for Gravity MTB. Located on Third Street in downtown Cumberland, the Garage is now home to everything Gravity offers: coaching, strength training, race support, demo bikes, retail, and the only full suspension service centre on Vancouver Island.

Two people sit on a tan leather couch in a bike shop or showroom, surrounded by mountain bikes and cycling gear. A woman on the left wears an orange shirt and a purple cap, smiling with crossed arms. A man on the right wears a camouflage shirt and a gray cap, smiling with hands clasped. Bicycles are lined up behind them, and cycling jerseys and medals are hanging on the wall above. The space has a black wall with banners reading "GRAVITY MTB" and "FORBIDDEN." In the foreground, a modern glass-top coffee table and a striped rug complete the scene.

CJ and Chad Hendren, the duo behind Gravity, have been building toward this for years. Chad, a seasoned downhill racer and Canada’s National Downhill Team Coach, adds elite-level racing and coaching credibility. CJ brings a powerhouse combination of high-level sports experience, fitness expertise, a deep passion for coaching and a sharp eye for business management and marketing. The two met in Whistler and relocated to the Valley in 2016. By blending their skillsets, it laid the perfect foundation which has resulted in the successful creation of Gravity MTB.

As demand grew, so did Gravity: adult programs, women’s clinics, school sessions, race development and strength training. For years, they ran it all out of a small garage in Comox and a mobile trailer. Now, they have a permanent home — a converted auto shop turned bike clubhouse with space for coaching, community, and everything in between.

Inside you’ll find Forbidden demo bikes, local art, a lounge area, and a full service training center. Through the back is a fully equipped suspension service centre with specialized tools, making it the only shop on Vancoouver Island capable of handling all suspension services that previously required sending parts off-island, they are now done right here. Next door is the gym, where certified trainers run group classes and one-on-one sessions designed specifically for mountain bikers.

Taken together, it’s more than just a bike business. It’s a hub for the entire riding community — shaped by what riders have asked for, and powered by the people who show up.
